Gaida (Bulgarian bagpipe) • GD 106

as part of the "Musical instruments in Bulgaria" series

An exciting new CD featuring 17 tracks of traditional Bulgarian melodies played by master pipers from different regions of Bulgaria, including: Georgi Mussorliev, Kostadin Varimezov, Georgi Doichev, Peicho Peev, Dimitar Chupetlovski, Nikola Atanassov, etc.

Most tracks are seldom heard recordings from the archives of the Bulgarian National Radio or specially recorded for Gega New under the supervision of folk music editor Lili Hristozova. There are detailed notes on the history of the Bulgarian gajda written by ethnomusicologist, Prof. Manol Todorov. The CD also presents unusual examples from Northwest Bulgaria and even a double-chanter gajda from the village of Dolishte (Varna region). Most tracks feature solo gajda players accompanied by tâpan or small orchestra and there are several good "danceable" tunes (Pravo, Rachenitsa, Trite Pâti, Svornato, etc.)
